I began collecting at 11. Back in those days, they delivered a “newspaper” daily to every household on the block. One day, this newspaper outlined an auction of the first Superman comic. It brought in a staggering amount of money. I shared the story with my dad, who said, “I probably had that one as a kid.” “But Dad", I said, "It’s worth more than our house!” “True”, he answered, “But the paper seems to indicate this comic is in very good condition. We didn’t take care of comics back then.”
I believe it was at that point that I resolved to buy and care for comics. By the time I was a teen, I was using any funds I could scrape up to buy comics. I would usually either buy one, read it gingerly, and store it away in an archival sleeve, or buy two, one to read and one that was never read, just archived.
I remember telling some friends as I planned for college, that someday, I would use my comic collection to pay for my kid’s college. It never happened. They went, and I did, indeed, pay a fare share, but I wasn’t ready, at that point, to cash in my chips. Now, as I plan for both the sale of my house, which has become a repository of fine art and collectibles, and retirement, I am sharing my good fortune with others here on this site.
People question why I sell below market value. That’s easy, I want to make a fair profit and offer even dealers a chance to buy from me and still have a resale margin. The value of my comics has increased at a greater rate than any other investment I have made. I would rather sell and move on than hold out for a “fair market price”.
